Occasionally, a completed task cannot upload/report because it can't access the project server. If a task is completed before the deadline, but can't report until after, what happens? What happens if the task itself doesn't complete before the deadline? Does it vary by project?

I'm not worried about it, I'm just curious. My thoughts were that the task would abort if it didn't finish in time, and simply just not credit if it was completed but didn't report in time.

Does it vary by project?

Yes. Generally, BOINC will abort a task if it has not at least started by the deadline, but if it's already started it's up to the projects. Many have a grace period after the deadline (though another replication is usually sent out at that point) where you will still get credit if it's returned in another X days after the deadline. Some will abort the task from the server, some will let them go indefinitely. It really depends on the kind of work the project is doing, and its admins.

As far as I know, if a task isn't reported by the deadline the server will send the task out to another person. If their computer returns the task before your computer does, you probably won't get any credit for it. Like the previous user said, the server might then abort it for you, or it may let it go but then not give any credit once you hand it in.
