I have a new Xubuntu install running a package install of x86_64-pc-linux-gnu V7.2.42. After the initial install the manager connected to the localhost when started. I then modified gui_rpc_auth.cfg and remote_hosts.cfg to allow eFMer BoincTasks access from selected PCs on my LAN. Following the changes BoincTasks connects fine but the manager will not unless I manually connect the manager to computer 127.0.0.1/password (localhost/password will not connect). gui_rpc_auth.cfg and remote_hosts.cfg are in the /etc/boinc-tasks directory with sym-links in the /var/lib/boinc-tasks directory. Permissions are: gui_rpc_auth.cfg Owner: root, Access: Read & Write; Group: boinc Access: Read only; Others: None remote_hosts.cfg Owner: root, Access: Read & Write; Group: boinc Access: Read only; Others: Read only The distribution gui_rpc_auth.cfg was an empty file (LF only). I have tried the changes both with and without an additional LF without success. Assistance in resolving this annoyance will be greatly appreciated. Bill P |

Have you tried playing around with permissions? Maybe only give boinc access or extend rights. I also have a symlink of gui_rpc_auth.cfg in my home directory. My reasons to participate in grid computing: 1. I'm using true renewable energy (German accreditation; no certificate purchasing) 2. Production and disposal (will) amount to about 95% of the energy "used" during the lifetime of my PC 3. Helping |

Following the changes BoincTasks connects fine but the manager will not unless I manually connect the manager to computer 127.0.0.1/password (localhost/password will not connect). Hostname/password handling in manager is... er, quirky. I'll include this in the next bug report. Permissions are: If Manager can read this file you shouldn't need to tell Manager what host/password to use. Is your user account in group boinc? |

Thank you for the responses Juha and axl. If Manager can read this file you shouldn't need to tell Manager what host/password to use. Is your user account in group boinc? Yes, my user account is in the boinc group Have you tried playing around with permissions? Maybe only give boinc access or extend rights. Not yet. I was going to change all others access to Read only but was waiting to see if anyone had any other suggestions. I'll try that and post the result. Bill P |

I changed permissions of gui_rpc_auth.cfg to: Owner: root, Access: Read & Write Group: boinc Access: Read only Others: Read only and boincmgr now connects to the localhost without entering host or password. While this works it seems to compromise the security of using a rpc password. I have 6 PCs running Linux. On all my user is a member of the group boinc, permissions of gui_rpc_auth.cfg are "Others None" and gui_rpc_auth.cfg has a user specified password. On 4 of them boincmgr works as it should. On 2 of them gui_rpc_auth.cfg permissions has to allow Others Read only access or gui_rpc_auth.cfg has to be empty for boincmgr to connect to the localhost automatically. Strange??? |

Did you remember to log out & back in after adding your account to boinc group? |

I have the same problem on Linux Ubuntu 14. The first time opening the GUI, it works great. If you close it and re-open it in the same session, it gets stuck on connecting to localhost. So far, I've only had the problem once on Windows, and closing and reopening solved it. |

Maybe it was still open in background ... @foxfire: I recently had problems getting BM to connect because I hadn't checked the permissions on the mount point. /media/datac was 640 ... but it needed 641.
