I get this error message when shutting down my PC (Win7 64-bit), with BOINC 7.2.42 installed as a service. It seems to be basically the same error reported earlier, http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8833&postid=51923#51923 but I just wanted to check it out with the current released version of BOINC. I looked in the BOINC program folder, and no such file exits, so it is not surprising that it is not found. |

OK, one thing you can try to do is uninstall BOINC, then reinstall it. Then check if the file is still missing. Could someone or something have deleted it? |

OK, I just re-installed BOINC 7.2.42 x64 as a service (all users, no screensaver), and the "boincsvcctrl.exe" file was in fact there in the program folder as it should be. I have re-booted a couple of times with no problems, so it seems that everything is working fine thus far. I think that file may have been removed by an AV I was using (Bitdefender free), which has a tendency to block files it does not like, and maybe removed it without alerting me, though that is a bit of speculation on my part. However, I am now back to using MSE with the appropriate exclusions to the BOINC folders, and hopefully that will prevent it from happening again. Thanks for your input. |

Great, thanks. I'll let the developer know. |

I have found the reason for the missing file (boincsvcctrl.exe). It is not due to the AV, but it is missing on the initial install when I upgrade (or downgrade) from another version. In order to get the file, I have to run the installation a second time and do a "repair"; then the file gets installed. This may not be a problem on clean installs, I have not checked that. |

Also note that the problem is apparently just for service installs. I have installed 7.3.11 (for example) as a non-service on a couple of WinXP machines with no problem getting boincsvcctrl.exe installed in the BOINC program directory. And my first success with 7.2.42 noted previously was after having totally removed 7.3.11 from a Win7 64-bit machine (including deleting registry entries), so I guess I have tried a clean install, and it works OK there too. |
