Hello, I am having problems with the wcgrid task. I also run seti@home, but don't have problems with it. I have my local configuration set to use 100% of my CPU's (2) and no more than 10% of CPU cycles, but wcgrid uses anywhere from 25% - slightly more than 50%. This causes my laptop to run very hot. Task Manage shows that wcgrid is using more CPU cycles than System Idle!! I have the latest BIONC download for Intel and am running on a ThinkPad T61p, with 4GB memory, a Core Duo Intel processor, 500GB hard drive, and Windows XP Professional with all the latest updates. Does anyone have an idea what is wrong or what I can do, other than just stop using BOINC on this machine until a future upgrade fixes the problem? I have an 8-core AMD system running the same version of BOINC and when I set the CPU usage to 10%, wcgrid only uses 10%?? Any help would be appreciated! Phil |

What client version, what exact science [FAAH or FAHV ** or SN2S etc]. Of course your Activity menu is set to run based on preferences. If you go as low as 10%, you could as well stop altogether using this device. It's very evidently not up to even the most regular minimalistic crunching. 10% CPU cycles BTW means 9 seconds pause, 1 second running, or if also when crunching if device is in use and 24 hours on, 2.4 hours per day. Of course if 2 tasks run, you'd indeed be seeing varying % of utilization... all depends of the timing each of the 2 tasks pause. ** FAHV was just launched and has throttle/going rough/zombie issues. If that's the science, revert to the WCG forums. Edit: My nearly 8 year old Duo/Vaio Centrino runs 24/7 at 100%, but I keep the varies intakes and exhausts clean with compressed air [runs on Notepal pad with 3 fans], for that is the main problem with laptops running too hot even at very low crunching percentages. The Version I'm running is 7.0.64(x86), wxWigets Version 2.8.10. Both fahv (~50% CPU usage) and faah (~25% CPU usage) are running. The laptop is a 2.4 GHz Core Duo Intel processor, and has never had this problem in the past. I've been running wcgrid on this machine since 2009. I regularly clean the fan intakes with compressed air, when there is a heating issue, but this doesn't respond to that, since I'm running basically 100% CPU usage all the time. In fact, this problem just started in the last few days. Prior to this everything ran at the levels specified in the Configuration and the temperature was in the mid 50's C. Now it is in the high 70's C. Before I noticed this problem, I ran at 30% CPU usage in the Configuration and never observed this issue. I will send the question to the WCG Forums. thanks, Phil |
