OS: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, DEP Always-On I install BOINC via the command line as shown: boinc_7.0.64_windows_x86_64.exe /S /V"ALLUSERS=1 /Passive /NoRestart /Log %Temp%\BOINCInstall.log" With the previous 7.0.28 version, BOINC didn't work with limited user accounts until you added those accounts to the boinc_admins local group, either though the computer management utility or via the command line: Net LocalGroup boinc_admins Users /Add However with 7.0.64 adding limited users to boinc_admins no longer resolves the problem and while with 7.0.28 at least it failed silently, with 7.0.64 one continually gets windows error messages saying that the client has crashed. BOINC has never played nicely with limited accounts, in some earlier versions limited accounts didn't even have read access to the \Program Files\BOINC directory. As some others have commented, one should not have to give up the security advantages of running as a limited user in order to help out with various research projects. |

Probably the problem with the missing manifest. Will be fixed in a future version of BOINC, as per changeset 24e46ae: WIN: Reintroduce the application manifest for the core client. If BOINC was launched from an unprivileged (non-admin/not part of boinc_users/boinc_admin) attempts to write state files were re-directed to the VirtualStore instead of failing. Once things were fixed other random issues would occur. |
