G'Day All!!
I have been running Seti@home since the year 2000 and have never had a problem.
Have run it on all Windows OS since then.. and on multiple computers... again. nil problem.

However.. I have just done a minor upgrade to my PC.. new SSD and new video card.
I even lashed out and bought a new copy of Windows 7 and put a clean install on but now when I install Boinc my internet connection keeps dropping.

One minute it is the gateway not responding.. next it is something else.

Windows can repair it each time with 2 simple clicks of the mouse.. but as soon as Boinc kicks in to work in idle time.. away it goes.. and kills the connection again.

Any theories???

Have been running it for this long and would hate to stop now.

Cheers

Never seen this. Is port 31416 over localhost IP 127.0.0.1 not being obstructed by the security software? BOINC needs them to be able to talk between manager and core client. Exit the BOINC manager, but leave the core client [boinc.exe] running to see it the situation goes away.

What kind of internet connection do you use?
Phoneline/Modem? Modem/single cat5/cat6 cable? Router/modem/single cable? Router/modem/network?

In Windows 7, did you set up a normal (Home) network, or the Homegroup network?
Are any computers on a shared LAN?
If so, do all computers have a unique IP address?

And indeed, what kind of security software do you use, just Windows Firewall or some third party suite?

Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe require TCP port 31416 to be open to them for internal communication. They need to have private access in the Windows firewall.
Boinc.exe requires TCP ports 80 and 443 to be open for communications on the internet. It needs only private access in the Windows firewall, unless you have it installed on a laptop and you roam around a lot, then it needs public access as well.

Netgear DG834G Modem.. connected to the home telephone line.

The network is setup on a normal (Home) network.

Am using Windows Firewall and Avira Antivirus. I have put an exception in the firewall for BOinc.

Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe require TCP port 31416 to be open to them for internal communication. They need to have private access in the Windows firewall.

It's all very confusing as I have never had these sorts of problems in the 12 years of running Seti.

As soon as I uninstall Boinc then the problem stops.

Might try going to the previous version of Boinc as that is what I was running on the old PC and see if that makes any difference.

The most common error I am getting is the network being unable to access the gateway.

Cheers

Can you please give the Windows error for this one? You should be able to find it in the Event Viewer in Start->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer->Windows logs->System. But check Application as well, see if there's any errors shown for when BOINC runs.

You say you 'bought a new copy of Windows 7', so what were you using before?
Are you using the Wifi section of your Netgear modem/router, or are you wired?

Can you access the router's login page?
(default settings is
IP address: 192.168.0.1 (alternate login URL http://www.routerlogin.net/)
login: admin
password: password)

If you can, is the gateway's IP address the same here as the one in your network (Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections ->right-click your network connection->properties, select 'internet protocol 4'->properties.
What are the settings here for IP address and DNS numbers?
Next click Advanced->is DHCP enabled? What does it say under Gateway?
Next open a command line window (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt, type in ipconfig /all
In among the text, does it give the default gateway there? Is it as your Netgear says it is, or is it not showing? (which is normal by the way, if it isn't. No need to worry if there's no gateway value showing in Windows).

My previous version of Windows 7 was a naughty version that had been cracked.

The modem is wired into the ethernet port of the PC

All are set for automatic.. and the router gateway address is: 202.154.95.70

What are the settings here for IP address and DNS numbers? Greyed out as Automatic
Next click Advanced->is DHCP enabled? YES
What does it say under Gateway? It is blank
Next open a command line window (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt, type in ipconfig /all

Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 and 202.154.95.70

I just reinstalled BOinc and left to room to put my daughter to bed.. and here is what came up when I got back.
The internet had dropped.. and when I told it to repair.. it was the gateway error again.

Event Viewer error:
The description for Event ID 194 from source AtcL001 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

\Device\NDMP3
Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller

The specified resource type cannot be found in the image file

Event Viewer warning:
Name resolution for the name boinc2.ssl.berkeley.edu timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

I have uninstalled Boinc and have not had a single drop out since.

Hmmmm again!!

What projects are attached to the client? Not this website as this is not a project, just a forum. Tried to attach to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ with 7.0.42 and initially it pops up the username/password box (not email/password), but then it fails.
