Does BOINC temporarily quit using my CPU if I start a CPU-intensive application, like PhotoShop, or FinalCut?

If I was then to quit such an application, does BOINC automatically start to use more of the CPU?

If BOINC doesn't work this way, how do you set it up so it won't interfere with one's normal applications?

thanks!
