I am running ProteinPredictor and SetiAtHome as two BOINC projects.

Lately BOINC has gotten in the situation with ProteinPredictor of "Requesting 0 seconds of work" when there are no ProteinPredictor units to be processed. Repeated attempts to "Update" do not correct the situation. Only "Reset project" jars it into again requesting non-zero seconds of work.

Seti continues to work (at least to the extent their servers can be kept running ;-)

Anyone else seeing this 0 seconds phenom?

Somewhere in there is the right way to configure my projects; but I'm the kind of user who signed up to BOINC just to use spare cpu time, not to become an expert in this. SETI was just fine by itself, until SETI servers became so unreliable that I decided to donate my time to another project.

Now if I understant what work scheduler is trying to do, it appears that BOINC is tryiong to be "polite," when all I want it to do is "keep busy." And with the SETI situation, that seems to be cutting off downloads of ProteinPredictor units. Did I get that much right?

So, is there a quick way to set the work scheduler to "just keep busy, regardless of project"?

Well, as a quick-fix you may try suspending the SETI project in BOINC. That way, when P@H runs out of work it will keep requesting from P@H irrespective of its current debt value.

Thanks, Chris. I have been reluctant to do that, because I have a much longer history with SETI and I'd like to see them through to the end of the project; and besides, Protein has been stingy with its availability of units to work on also.

But I'll give it a try for a week or so until SETI gets its act together--they could use some ET help, I think.

Ok, but please don't mistake suspend for detach.

Suspend just puts the project on temporary hold.
Detach kills the project folder and any in-progress/un-reported work.

Suspend is quite harmless and the project can be resumed anytime. Just keep an eye on the SETI homepage and once you see that it's up and running again, resume the project and click "No new work" for P@H. Then once all the P@H units are completed and uploaded, you just detach from P@H. No mess, no fuss. :)

One last question: the link that comes across on the email that arrives (after I subscribed) to the thread doesn't work. Doesn't even look reasonable to me (http://a.b.c/forum_thread.php?id=66) It would be very useful if it did work; any ideas why it does not?

Erm, yes.
It's using the default host name settings, or the person that set it up configured it as a.b.c with the intention of changing it, but forgot about it....I've been meaning to email Dr. Anderson a note about it, but I keep forgetting...and I'm away from my email at the moment.

That's something I can do to help; thanks. Maybe the "Test Project" was a moment of honesty? ;-)

It's not even a project, so before people complain they couldn't connect to the Boinc project... We had such a person over on the Break the Forums project. ;)
