When my bionic task manager starts, there is a line in the message window that reads 'No usable GPU's found'. I'm completely computer stupid and don't know how to check for and use the GPU. I've got windows vista.

That's only an informational message. The Graphical Processing Units of some brands can be used to do computations with BOINC in addition to the CPU. They are not needed for them.
