I have just downloaded BOINC, and according to the BOINC manager I have attached to seti@home and einstein@home. However, I'm not getting any work, the status under the Project tab says "scheduler request pending", and the ballon that appears when I hover over the BOINC icon in taskbar says BOINC is currently suspended. I've checked through several FAQs and message boards, tried re-attaching and updating both projects, checked and double-checked my firewall, made sure that "suspend" hasn't be checked under the commands menu in the BOINC client in the project tab, and now I've run out of ideas. Can someone point me in the right direction?

In your General Preferences, do you have your "Do work while computer is in use?" pref set to "No"? If so, try changing to "Yes". Read this. If you do change the preference to "Yes", be sure to "Update" Einstein or Seti (whichever project's prefs you change) so the change will be loaded into BOINC.

Thanks for the suggestion. Seti@home database is closed at present, but will check preferences when it's back. Fingers crossed!

There is also a menu item under commands so that BOINC will run always, no matter what the preference says.

So, I too am having a problem with Boinc manager claiming that "Boinc is currently suspended". But, the details are somewhat different, and I am more suspicious of a bug than of a configuration problem. I have a couple of desktop machines and a laptop, all of which have Boinc installed on them, and they are all attached to the same projects (SETI, Rosetta, and ClimatePrediction). All three machines use the same profile (i.e. I have not differentiated them in any way). The two desktop machines chug away perfectly happily. The laptop - which is *not* running on batteries, btw - steadfastly refuses to process work. The screen saver fires up, but no work starts. The projects all appear to have downloaded work, but then won't run it. I've tried resetting the projects, detaching and re-attaching to them, etc.

I do have the profile set so that Boinc only works when the machine is actually idle, rather than running as a low priority thread.

Here's the first of the settings from the SETI profile (the others are identical, btw):
Do work while computer is running on batteries?
(matters only for portable computers) no
Do work while computer is in use? no
Do work only after computer is idle for 3 minutes
Do work only between the hours of (no restriction)
Leave applications in memory while preempted?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') no

Any clues? I'm at my wits end...

Thx - Michael Barrett

Sometimes the client will interpert the screensaver as activity and suspend because of the no work when active preference. In most cases if BOINC's delay is smaller than the screensaver it will work.

In this case, the PC has a screensaver delay of five minutes, and, as is shown from the parameters below, BOINC has a delay of three minutes.

Any other thoughts?

Hi,

I have a similar problem. I have BOINC running on two PCs; both running only SETI@home. On one PC everything runs fine. On the other one, IF BOINC IS SET TO RUN BASED ON PREFERENCES, whenever the screensaver comes on I get a screensaver display with the BOINC logo and the message "BOINC is currently suspended.

If BOINC is set to RUN ALWAYS there is no display whatsoever once the screensaver starts up.

I have set the screensaver options not to go to blank screen. The PC is also set not to go to STANDBY or to HIBERNATE.

I am positive that this is a bug, for the following reasons:

1. The same preferences apply to both PCs since I am running only one project -- SETI.

2. Even though the message says that BOINC is currently suspended, or there is no display at all, the PC is actually processing the data, returning results, getting new data etc.; under either setting of BOINC.

I am giving the details of the System & Display card (ATI All-In-Wonder Pro, 8MB) on which the "BOINC is currently suspended message appears below.

Can anybody help?

Tks,

Joseph Carri

I installed BOINC this morning, and have run the Climate Change program all day, reaching 0.55%. I disabled the screen saver early on because once it was displaying, I couldn't access the Desktop; but BOINC continued to run in the background. This evening I wanted to run a database that makes heavy demands on the CPU, so opened the BOINC Manager and clicked on Suspend. Now, I can't work out how to un-suspend. How can I do this - and have I made a serious mistake?

i've downloaded and installed boinc manager 5.10.45, and it seems to be working, but ...

i've set the preferences to allow running at all times ... only thing is, it won't. after five minutes, it suspends itself and won't resume computing until i wiggle the mouse. if i don't touch the mouse for another five minutes, the program suspends computing again. i HAVE told the program to read the confi file and the local prefs file again and again, changing only one selection at a time, and nothing helps.
i've disabled the screen saver, and checked the "run always" selection under Activity on the toolbar. still nothing.

this is very annoying as it means the program suspends itself while i'm sleeping, which is when i'd really like it to be crunching away.

any ideas?

joel

Possibly you've got that special power saving option selected on your website profile. It cannot be found in the local client preferences.

The line to look for in the global_prefs.xml file is

<suspend_if_no_recent_input>20.0</suspend_if_no_recent_input>

indeed, that exact line (well ... cept for 5 instead of 20)
is in the file you specified. and the five minutes is the time before suspension starts.

so do i delete the line? or alter it to have a much larger number:
i'm not familiar with xml language.

thanks!!

also ... how do i get the program to re-read the profile? do i have to restart?
or will Activity/Read config or Activity/Read local prefs do it?

thanks!

that seems to have done it ... saved a copy of global_prefs, then edited the original and removed that line. saved it back, and told the program to read local prefs, and it appears to be chugging right along without suspending itself now. :)
thanks a bunch!
