installing Boinc 6.10.18 on a Windows 7 machine. doesnt get to the installer and window pops up that says "Error 1327:invalid drive Z:\" (or X, or Y) it changes. I do have a NAS mapped to X, Y, and Z. My Documents I moved to Z. tried Disconnecting drive map for all 3 and shuting down. power up try to reinstall, still get invalid drive Z. tried running in XP SP3 compatability, still invalid drive z. Why does it care if I have Network drives mapped and How do I get around this to install Boinc?

Does it also say something about msi?
This is the un-install info that Windows uses.
If Windows is looking for this to upgrade from a previous version of BOINC and it's been corrupted or cleaned up, then Windows will search your entire drive path looking for it, ending up on Network drives.

If it's an existing installation, where are your existing BOINC data files? BOINC itself will tell you in the block of messages it shows at startup.

This is a bug which has been logged in the trac database for over a year ([trac]#815[/trac]), and I managed to work round a variant of it - but you probably need to find and change things in the Windows registry. Have you got experience of doing that?

In case you're not sure, erloha, I made a quick batch file that shows the BOINC installation directory and the BOINC Data directory. Get it from here. (others may find it useful as well)

Save it somewhere convenient, e.g. c:\temp\
Then do Start->Run, type cmd, click OK. In command line window, type cd\temp and press Enter. Next type wheredir and press Enter.

You can also run it as wheredir >> c:\boincdir.txt, which outputs the contents to a boincdir.txt file in your C: drive tree, so you can easily copy&paste the information if it's needed.

This is a new installation. Boinc has never been on this machine. It never gets to the installer. to modify the Data folder. I completely removed the network drive mapped to X, y, and z. But it still says invalid Drive Z:\

Ran Wheredir. Did not find any directories or Registry entries.

Try the first workround from that trac ticket (bug report):

Edit all entries in the registry:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion?\Explorer\User Shell Folders" with Data on others than local Drives or %USERPROFILE%

after installing BOINC you can reassign the old Data...
