Hello, When BOINC is running on my system, it will crash my computer after about 5 minutes. Not sure what is causing it, but I've had it running on this system in the past without any issues. When the system crashes, it abruptly turns off. To get it back on, I have to unplug the power. There are no event error logs from the crash. With BOINC turned off, I have no system issues. details: Windows XP Pro, SP2 BOINC v 6.10.18 Projects: Einsein, SETI, PrimeGrid I have thus far tried the following: upgrading BOINC to the newest version uninstall and reinstall BOINC turning off the screensaver upgraded my video driver upgraded DirectX suspended all but one project Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark |

Thanks for the suggestions. My system is clean inside and the cpu usually runs at about 47C. I think the problem was my graphics card. I turned off the gpu by creating a cc_config.xml file: <cc_config> <options> <no_gpus> </options> </cc_config> My graphics card is based on the Nvidia 6800, but the version I have does not have a fan on the graphics card ( just a large heat sink). The gpu might have been overheating, but the utilities can't tell me the temp of the gpu. Seem to be working fine now. Too bad the gpu is now off, won't be able to process as fast. Previously, it ran for years without issues with the gpu. |

I am running XP Pro, just recently installed fresh due to the same thing happening. Boinc slows to a crawl and then flash of BSOD and system restart with an MS reporting error of a problem with the video card. This only began when I updated to 6.10.18. Interestingly enough I wasn't having any problems until I attached to primegrid for the winter solstice challenge. I am also running Primegrid, Seti and Einstein.I won't if this error only occurs when having all three of them attached... As of tonight I found the system had crashed and rebooted again and once again the crash report indicated a problem with the video card. My card is an XFX Nvidia GTX 280 and I am using the latest (9.0c) Dx and video drivers. |

On my fairly recent install of win7 on my quad-core system (core i7 950, water-cooled, 4GHz), BOINC is also causing system crashes reliably within 5-10 minutes of running. Processor temps never go beyond 49°C (direct MB readout). Machine is Prime95 torture-test stable for much longer than that (I've run it for at least an hour where it will run slightly hotter than BOINC). I'm running MilkyWay@home and SETI@home. My GPU is disabled after reading this thread (even though my GPU is not NVidia-based :-), still it crashes my system reproducibly. Of course, I'm running 6.10.18. With BOINC turned off, no crashes whatsoever. Can anybody replicate this effect or am I the only one? Suggestions? Ideas? |
