Hello I'm using ATI Radeon HD4870 512MB video card which is in the supported list. I also downloaded the newest drivers, Catalyst 9.9 that is. I also tried 9.7 which is one of the tested ones according to ATI. I also configured BOINC to use GPU while not in idle mode. Still nothing. I have Milkyway and Collatz Conjecture in project list but those don't seem to work. I noticed that Collatz downloaded a packet which had a text "Intel" in it. I assume that it is optimized for my CPU (Intel Core2 Duo E7300 2.66GHz). I also Installed Folding@home but I would rather use my GPU for space applications than protein folding. Just my personal preference. I also want to use just one program. Atleast that program seems to be doing something with the gpu while I'm doing something else. Any help is appreciated. 9.10.2009 15:32:45 Starting BOINC client version 6.6.38 for windows_intelx86 BOINC v6.6.38 doesn't have ATI support. You need to be running v6.10.xx to use ATI. v6.10.13 from the download - all versions page seems pretty stable so far, and probably the best bet. |

That seemed like a solution but doesn't work with Milkyway yet. Now the problem seems to be that I can't get GPU processess from Milkyway. Collatz provided me with something but I don't really care about their goal. I noticed that there is some kind of priority for GPU tasks in Properties. How can I change it so that I get GPU task from Milkyway? Or any other solution? 9.10.2009 16:34:27 Milkyway@home Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. You've done your bit. As to why you got nothing back..... dunno. That's a project question, not a BOINC question. I suggest you ask on the project's forum. |

9.10.2009 16:34:27 Milkyway@home Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Obviously Milkyway has no GPU tasks to send out. If you don't want to run Collatz tasks, detach from Collatz Conjecture. Gruß, Gundolf Computer sind nicht alles im Leben. (Kleiner Scherz) ![]() |

That's a shame. Though, atleast Collatz caused my GPU to crash. Temps went up to 80C on the first run cycle and after downgrading the performance temps stayd around 70C but still crashed. CPU stays nicely in 50C under load. This card has been blamed for running too hot. Warms up my room quite nicely when the window is closed. This GPU thing needs somekind of resource control to be usable. I know there's been talk about it been an ON/OFF thing, but maybe somebody will figure it out. Now I just have to wait for new GPU projects. Thanks for the help. |

This GPU thing needs somekind of resource control to be usable. I know there's been talk about it been an ON/OFF thing, but maybe somebody will figure it out. The GPU can only be either completely under load, or totally not. It cannot be throttled, if that's what you meant. However, BOINC can be instructed to only use the GPU when the computer is otherwise not in use (idle). If you want to learn more about what's happening with the GPU etc., take a look at the long FAQ I have written and am updating about it. |

I found that in "Edit MilkyWay@home preferences" there is a checkbox "Use GPUs for Computation?" which was by default unchecked. I checked that and tried to get new tasks. Couldn't get anything. Also no test tasks are available. |

Found a possible fix for my stability problems if anyone is interested. http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=886&nowrap=true#24737 It seems like new Catalyst drivers don't work that well. I'm downgrading to Catalyst 8.12 |

There is a way to throttle the GPU with http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=3517 TThrottle in the BOINC Add-Ons If you still need it and need help let me know. |

I brought a HD 4890 OC 1 GB video card and using it with Boinc 6.6.36, it doesn't support the GPU which uses ATI Stream. Boinc uses CUDA which is found on GeForce video cards. I was getting video artifacts on all my games so I had to buy a new GeForce 285 GTX video card. With this new 285 GTX, all my games work fine and I'm getting lots of Cuda projects from SETI and Milkyway. Milkyway@home will add support for ATI GPU soon. I did tried Folding@home but I heard that it is old project. GeForce video card is better because it has a co-processor and ATI GPU's do not. When I had the 4890 OC, it was running too hot and I think it was crashing the games even inside a air conditioned room. I used a 750 watt power supply with a large 130mm fan. The case I am using is a Cooler Master Full tower with four huge fans. |

I brought a HD 4890 OC 1 GB video card and using it with Boinc 6.6.36, it doesn't support the GPU which uses ATI Stream. ATI detection is coming in BOINC 6.10 which is to be released to the public any day now. Milkyway@home will add support for ATI GPU soon. You can already run your Milkyway tasks on ATI GPUs, though be it through the anonymous platform. One advantage of doing it that way is that it doesn't matter what BOINC version you run, the files coming in the 3rd party package will detect if you have a suitable ATI GPU and use it automatically. You do need Double Precision on the GPU, which not all ATI GPUs can do. I did tried Folding@home but I heard that it is old project. It's a separate project, not affiliated to BOINC or using BOINC. GeForce video card is better because it has a co-processor and ATI GPU's do not. The Nvidia CUDA capable and ATI Stream capable GPUs are coprocessors. In terms of GigaFlops, your GTX285 is slower than the HD4890 was. 1063 vs 1360, both for single precision. Your GTX285 is thinking it can do double precision (but it isn't really doing it, Nvidia is tricking the GPU into thinking it does it), the HD4890 did true double precision. Numbers for that: 88.6GFlops for the GTX285 vs 272GFlops for the HD4890. Your GTX285 has only got 240 stream processors, your HD4890 had 800. Your GTX285 has GDDR3, your HD4890 had GDDR5. As for price... Your GTX285 starts at $349.-, the HD4890 OC 1GB starts at $215.- With the Milkyway application capable of using a maximum of 400 GFlops DP, which card do you really think is the better one? |

GeForce video card is better because it has a co-processor and ATI GPU's do not. You said: The Nvidia CUDA capable and ATI Stream capable GPUs are coprocessors. When Boinc manager runs the benchmarks, it said that the 285 GTX has a coprocessor. When I ran the benchmark under 4890 OC, it said no coprocessor found. I have heard that the 4890 OC is more powerful that the 285 GTX but I had to sell the 4890 OC because it was too hot and crashing my system. At the time I was using the 4890 OC, I have not been able to get Milkyway tasks for the ATI GPU. |

When Boinc manager runs the benchmarks, it said that the 285 GTX has a coprocessor. When I ran the benchmark under 4890 OC, it said no coprocessor found. The benchmarks only run for the CPU, not for the GPU. BOINC 6.6.36, which you run, only has Nvidia CUDA detection. BOINC 6.10 will have ATI CAL detection as well as Nvidia CUDA detection. e.g. 11-Oct-09 01:53:08 ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 3800 (RV670) (CAL version 1.4.403, 512MB, 428GFLOPS) 11-Oct-09 01:53:08 No NVIDIA library found That's from my system. I have an ATI videocard, no Nvidia one, hence the message that the Nvidia library isn't found. At the time I was using the 4890 OC, I have not been able to get Milkyway tasks for the ATI GPU. Because you didn't add the 3rd party application. See the Optimized apps thread in their forums for that. As I said, BOINC 6.6 does NOT detect ATI GPUs. BOINC 6.10 will do that. |

When Boinc manager runs the benchmarks, it said that the 285 GTX has a coprocessor. When I ran the benchmark under 4890 OC, it said no coprocessor found... As Ageless already mentioned, the message says that a coprocessor was found, namely the 285GTX. Since that version couldn't detect the 4890OC, it said "no coprocessor found". Gruß, Gundolf |
