looking in the data folder, not seeing a directory

What is the difference between a folder and a directory for you?

Can you see the data folder or is it hidden?

I can see, access the folder, I guess I was looking for a file called the directory, I can make new files and save/edit them there as well as open other information there, just not the .txt files

Windows terminology: A map, folder, or directory will hold files. Directory is the old word, pre-Windows. Only since Windows are directories called anything but that. Sigh.

Right-click on any of the std*.txt files.
1. Are they read-only, perhaps?
2. What can you open it with? If not Notepad (which should be default), then what? Are you allowed to use Notepad?

Nothing about them is out of the ordinary, not read only, not protected, no access restrictions (I forgot how much info one can get with the right click)

I have full access to the computer, I am the only user and my account is set as administrator. Despite my rudimentary questions I am semi-windows competent, still getting used to this Vista thing... Life was so much simpler when it was C:\\Run MS-DOS Shell

Tried Notepad, Wordpad, OpenOffice and Word, all say access is denied, everything else in the folder I can click on and open

Even with BOINC running, it's normally possible to open these text files with notepad, at least in XP.
The fact that you can't is suspicious.

stdoutdae.txt is basically an archive of all of the messages in the messages tab of the manager, and is pure ascii text.

I'd like to know just where the BOINC data files were installed, so could you please post the full path.

e.g. mine up to the projects folder is: E:\Application_Data\BOINC\projects

C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects

it was the default install location

That should be fine.
If Windows won't even allow you to open a text file there, then there's something wrong with Windows.

I agree with Les, if you can't open a simple text file, there's something wrong with your Windows.

Can you open any other text file on your system?
Have you checked with a fully updated anti-virus and other anti-malware (e.g. Spybot Search & Destroy, Adaware, Spywareblaster) that your system is free of nasties?

Follow these steps to take ownership back on the BOINC Data directory (and hopefully sub-directories).

A Vista administrator can do less than an XP administrator. You think you're the boss of everything on your computer, but Windows knows better than you. One of the reasons why Vista will never grace any of my systems. I can do without the added headache.

You should try a "chkdsk C:" (or the vista equivalent ;-)

I deleted EVERYTHING BOINC related, not just uninstalled but really cleaned house. I reinstalled, opened then closed (usually initiated the circle of death and frustration) and it worked fine. I can open those txt files y'all were talking about (even with BOINC running) and see everything from messages.


So far so good (it has only been 5 minutes), hopefully this will solve the problem, crossing my fingers it was just a bad install of the data folder the first time I installed BOINC that was causing the errors, I had never deleted that folder before.
