I am a new Linux user, I've just installed Fedora 8. As I run Boinc on my windows PCs, I wanted run it on my Linux setup. I installed the current version of Boinc by downloading it and running the various scripts, I did not use any of the installers (I tried that and they didn't work). Bonic "seems" to be running, in fact it seems to run all the time but yet doesn't seem to do much work. When I close the manager, it all stops. I don't know Linux very well yet, so it may be something in the way I set it up. Or perhaps that's the way it runs in Linux? It doesn't seem to run well. Any thoughts on what I can do? Thanks. |

Can you tell us specifically a) what didn't work with the installers (did you try with the package manager?) and b) how you're running BOINC now? I tried both the package installer from the applications menu and yum (perhaps they run the same thing). They would perform the install of the selected manager and client packages, but neither would run. Problems with connecting to the client, and a variety of errors. I then installed using the "Installing BOINC on Linux" page of www.wcgwiki.org. Basically, create a folder, download the install package, run the install package, run the binstall.sh script, and then run the command suggested by the binstall.sh script. I was then able to connect to a project. I think part of the problem is I was running the client in a terminal window, which would end it when I closed it. I used the boinc -daemon command and now it runs in the background. However, even though I have it set to not run while the PC is in use, it seems to run anyway. At least when I bring up the manager, the cpu run time and progress displays are counting up. I'm very new to Linux, although I've used Unix in the distant past, so I probably have bit off more then I can chew at this point trying to get this to work. It's been interesting though. |
