"Local host" is the computer that you're using. BOINC is in 2 parts: the "gui", which you can see, and the "Worker", or "daemon", which you can't. These 2 communicate via a port, so that the gui can show you what the worker is doing. Sometimes this port is blocked by something else at bootup. To get them to connect, go to the menu, click on Advanced, then on Select computer, and then the OK button. Don't put ANYTHING in the 2 fields! |

I have been having a similiar problem this week. I have 5 PCs all running XP or Vista. All had been running 5.10.x just fine, but this past week starting having problems connecting to localhost. Some are just fine. For others, I had to install an older version of Boinc Manager. 5.8.16 was the newest version that would run on one, 5.4.11 was the latest on another. If I got the old version running, I couldn't install 5.10.x and connect to localhost, I had to stay at the old version. I know it's not my firewall. |

In my book the usual suspects are firewall or AV or Antispam updates. Honorary reports most often involve Kaspersky, Symantec/Norton, ZoneLabs, could even be the bastardo Windows Defender. Make sure 127.0.0.1 and port 31416 is allowed free passage for all parts that involve BOINC.exe, BOINC.scr, BOINCmgr.exe and BOINCcmd.exe. For me, it's not AV or firewall. All my pcs have the same virus defs and settings, yet some still work and other done. It's strange that some old versions of boinc work and some don't. |

IF YOU HAVE 'WINSOCK ERROR 10061' or/and no project running in task manager and boinc run without calculate any WU . 1) Stop the 2 process boinc in task manager. 2) Go on the directory c:\programm files\Boinc 3) click droit sur Propriété (Property) 4) décocher Lecture seule et Appliquer la modif sur tous les sous repertoires =remove Read only and Apply the change on all subsdirectory. 5) Restart boinc and it run again. |

Okay, i have been trying everything i can think of to connect to my localhost. I still am unable to do so. I cant figure out whats wrong. I need help! I started experiencing the same problem on 17January. I tried everything suggested here (firewalls, Symantec, etc.) and finally got it working by downloading the old software 5.4.11. Don't quite understand why I had the problem. I hadn't upgraded BOINC, hadn't added any software of any sort to my computer - just one day it stopped connecting. Hope that helps... |

Did any of your software get an automatic update just before the problem started? Windows, firewall, virus checkers, other programs? This sometimes changes things drastically. |

I had the same issue on my VISTA32 PC just after MS OneCare updated to 2.0. The update messed with my network settings too. My 2 XP units did not have BOINC affected, just networking after the MS OneCare update. I stopped the BOINC service and when started it was working OK. After a while it was frozen again. I then found that in the slots directory I had a few minirosetta WU's and that when I stopped and started the BOINC service that I had 2-4 finished WU's. I deleted the slots with rosetta WU's and the manager started working fine. I blocked the Rosetta and RALPH from getting new work. David Anderson at Berkley discovered what was causing the issue and has produced a fix. During my problems I tried upgrading to 5.10.38 and lost the ability to sort projects and tasks. I back graded to 5.10.30 and still cannot sort my work. A bit MIFFED at that as I may have 10-40 WU's in queue and I am active on 40+ projects on this VISTA box. |

Okay, i have been trying everything i can think of to connect to my localhost. I still am unable to do so. I cant figure out whats wrong. I need help! I don't believe I had any sort of automatic updates. I have all automatic updates turned off and my usual style is to do a system backup on the weekend and then perform the updates manually. As this started on 17Jan, I don't believe my system was any different than it was on 16Jan. But maybe something IS updating automatically that I am not aware of..... |
