Hello, I've been running the GUI for years now, and thought I'd try to find some information on how to install the core client. I saw the option in the install program, but it failed. Is there anything I need to know to accomplish the transfer? 1. Do I need to finish the GUI work units first? ... is the data safe, as in new GUI versions? 2. Do I have to remove the GUI? ... that leads to: 3. Can I run both? I'm betting no on no.3, since the install took out my GUI, but there's no harm in asking, right? Now running a dual core, Intel, Vista 64. Ralph |

You have always been running the core client. The GUI just shows what the core client does. |

Hi, Sorry- I got the terms mixed up. I'd like to try the 'run as service' option. Ralph |

When reinstalling (even if you uninstall first), you don't lose your workunits. You can still open the Manager manually if you installed as a service (that's how I use it). |

Hi, - update - I was getting hung up on the install, because of the password prompt. I was mistaken in the belief that I was setting a password for BOINC security, and not just entering my admin password to allow BOINC permission to install. I guess I just missed that. I'm up and running as a service. We'll see how that works. Thanks! |

I run BOINC as a service also on a Win machine. By default, I do *NOT* run the BOINC Manager/GUI, so there is no icon in the system tray. This saves a negligable amount of CPU cycles, network traffic, and memory. If I need to check on or do something with BOINC, I can fire up the GUI, do whatever, then exit the GUI. Or more likely, remote into the machine or use my primary machine's BOINC GUI - Advanced / Select Computer ... function to remote directly into the other machine's BOINC GUI. |
