When I try to upgrade from 5.10.13 to either 5.10.16 or 5.10.20 when the installation is complete Bionic and on the installation screen I click launch Bionic now I get a failure, when I look in the Bionic directory there is no exe files at all. Anyone have any idea's how to fix this problem? ![]() |

Would you mind giving some more information, such as which operating system (besides Windows) and what the exact error is? By the way, if you have a Bionic directory and BOINC is installing to (the default) c:\\program files\\boinc directory, then it's not weird that there are no files in the bionic directory. But OK, assuming you like to type bionic where it is boinc. |

Sorry for the typo Bionc is the directory I mint, I don't know why I kept adding the extra i when I made the first post. My OS is Windows XP media edition, and oddly enough when I reinstalled it today to get the exact error message it worked. I tried it three times the other day with no success so I don't know what was going on however it seems to have solved itself. ![]() |

Still, what was the error message? |

Still, what was the error message? I didn't write down what was on the screen, it was a Windows run time error. In my event log I got Product: BOINC -- Internal Error 2753. boincmgr.exe. I had tried installing it on 2 different systems (both the same OS) the day before. I was trying to reproduce the error after you first reply so I could get the exact error and to my surprise it work fine. I didn't do anything differently, so I don't know what was up. Since then I have installed it on 3 systems (2 Win XP media and 1 Win 2003 server) and all worked fine. I don't know what was up the first time around. ![]() |

OK, Internal Error 2753 is an Installshield error. It is Installshield its way of telling you it could not install to the directory chosen as something was in there that it could not remove or overwrite (no permission). When you install BOINC over an older version, the installer will stop the BOINC service (if applicable) and remove older files before writing the new ones. If it does not have permission to do so, you get that error. As to why it now worked, are you sure you installed to the same directory all the time? (coming back to the Boinc and Bionic question. ;-)) |

Yes, it was the same directory, I didn't retype it I just took the defaults, which was the same was I installed Bionc the first time. Also I stopped Bionc before I started the installation. Maybe for some reason one of the files hung in an open state that locked the file. Windows does that sometimes. One odd thing though, it gave me the error when it said the installation was finished and asked if I wanted to launch it. Anyway it is working now so I guess I am sorry I bothered you in the first place. Thanks for you quick response and info. ![]() |

You keep saying: ... I installed Bionc the first time. ... Which is confusing as regards the folder name that you used, as the word is Boinc. More properly, BOINC, as it's an acronym, and stands for: Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing |

You keep saying: Think boing. That will help you remember the correct name. |

Ok, sorry for the typo's I use the default Dir of "C:\\Program Files\\BOINC" in every case that I installed Boinc. I never changed the name during the installation. I just left the default directory as it is displayed during the installation. Sorry for any confusion my mistyping of Boinc has caused in this posting. However when installing I always take the default ("C:\\Program Files\\BOINC") and never changed it, so during the installation my mistyping could not have caused the problem, as I never type “Bionc” or “Bionic” and accepted the default setting as it comes up. Typing has never been my strong suite, and as Boinc isn’t in my spell checkers dictionary and bionic is when I spell checked the first post I guess I mistakenly accepted the change to bionic and when I posted the second one I guess I only noticed the I after the n being wrong. I have added Boinc to my dictionary now and hopefully this will help keep me form making the same typo in future Post. ![]() |

Anyway it is working now so I guess I am sorry I bothered you in the first place. Thanks for you quick response and info. One thing I did find is that if Boinc was installed as a service in the prior version that if during the upgrade you select anything other than installing it as a service it will fail the installation. You will have to uninstall it and then reinstall it as a service to get it to work. (Note: I did not uninstall the older version that was installed as a service prior to installation of the upgrade at that point you have uninstalled then upgrade and then you are stuck because you can't uninstall the old version. You must reinstall the upgrade as a service). It would probably work if I had uninstalled the old version prior to installing the upgrade. It's not a big deal and I don't know if install shield has an option to uninstall the old version while installing the upgrade. It might just need a warning on the screen to select whether to install it as a service, shared Installation or Single user, letting people know that if it was installed as a service in the prior version and you want to change it to not be a service, that you should exit the installation and uninstall the prior version before installing the upgrade. ![]() |

Good point. I must say I never tested this. I'll add a ticket to Trac about this, with a link to your post. Thank you for reporting that. Now, whether or not it will be adjusted is another thing. The next major version of BOINC only comes as a service install, if I understood it correctly. But in the mean time I will add it to Trac. |

Please get this clarified. I will not be a happy camper to install BOINC as a service. Thank you. |
