Suddenly for no reason I am getting Media Player has stopped working errors since installing 5.10.20. They always popup after I come back to the PC and stop the screensaver. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Any ideas what would cause this? Does BOINC interact in anyway with the Windows Media Player? Dave Green |

Not that I know of. The BOINC screen saver? I'm impressed you got it to work at all. Support for Vista isn't supposed to be around until 6.x.y. It doesn't even come up for me. Kathryn :o) |

It's what I was told by Rom when I reported that the screen saver simply didn't work on my Vista box. And I've had at least a half dozen people email me through the help desk asking why the screen saver doesn't work in Vista. Two reports to the alpha list in the testing for 5.10 (they've back from 5.9.11 specifically) 1. The screensaver does not work for me at all under Vista. 2. I also can not run the screensaver under vista. In my case it is a service install. Vista wants to get approval for the service to talk to the desktop. Naturally this does not work well with a screensaver. Rom's response: Yeah, we don’t expect to have either of those two scenarios working until 6.0. Kathryn :o) |

Yep, the "Media Player has stopped responding message" only shows up with the BOINC screensaver enabled (who knows I got it working at all, it just does). I've turned the screensaver off, and no longer get the error messages. I'll just wait until 6.0 (any ideas on how long that will be) comes out. Dave |

One thing it could be is that the video overlay is being used by the screen saver. Then WMP will stop responding. I must ask though why you have WMP running while you have a screen saver on? Try turning off "Use video smoothing" in WMP's Tools, Options, Performance menu. See if that helps. Else go to Tools, Options, Performance, Advanced and turn off overlays. If that doesn't work, try turning off Video Mixing Renderer. |

I don't know about you, I have MS Vista home premium 32 on one of my boxes and the screensaver has always worked using boinc 5.8.16 then 5.10.7 then 5.10.20 Although, I have disabled the defender and user control. |

Actually, don't have WMP running while the screensaver is on. That is why I can't figure out the error. As a matter of fact, I get the error when I come back and stop the screensaver even if I haven't run WMP for days (I never really use it anyway). So not sure what is up, but I haven't gotten the error since I turned of the screensaver. This only started with 5.10.20. I never had any issues with Vista and previous versions. One thing it could be is that the video overlay is being used by the screen saver. Then WMP will stop responding. |

I'd guess that WMP has some sort of service running. I'm not in front of a Vista box right now, so I can't say for certain. Is there anything of note in the Event Log? Kathryn :o) |

This is all I can find, seems to be the same for each failure, though I'm not the best at reading these logs. OK, I have been doing some searching on the internet. Please read: Windows Media Player newsgroup - post 1 Windows Media Player newsgroup - post 2 Windows Media Player: WMP mini FAQ And you can always register and ask your specific question at Windows Media Player Newsgroup (Needs Hotmail or Live.com registration) You can tell them about BOINC and that we at the forums here pointed you towards them. It may be that you have some dll on your system that you need to delete or replace, but they would be better suited to figure that out. In the mean time I will update the BOINC developers about this. |

The BOINC screen saver? I'm impressed you got it to work at all. Support for Vista isn't supposed to be around until 6.x.y. It doesn't even come up for me. AFAIK, BOINC screensaver on Vista works fine if using single-user install. |

AFAIK, BOINC screensaver on Vista works fine if using single-user install. Sorry, I meant if you installed single user on a Wednesday with full moon at exactly midnight. Seems I missed a few words on my previous post, sorry for that. |

So far no luck on these message boards, and none of these threads really applied directly to the problem. I'll keep trying to get someone to respond there. If you need someone to beta test version 6, just let me know. =) Dave OK, I have been doing some searching on the internet. |

Just checking in to see if there was any news on this. Or any news on BOINC 6. Thanks, Dave |
