Is there any way to make Boinc run when no one is logged into a Windows XP machine? There are computers in all the conference rooms at work which are almost never used. The computers are on 24/7 but no one is logged in. I've installed BOINC on several of them as a service but after several days they have done almost no work. I also don't think BOINC was running when anyone but me was logged in.

Installing as a service is the way to go, though. As services run prior to anyone logging in. Although you may want to check in the services.msc if BOINC is set to automatically start. If it's set to Manual, then of course it won't start up.

Yet if at work, it's also possible BOINC can't get through the company firewall.
In that case we don't give out much help. BOINC asks to be installed on computers that you own, or if your work doesn't mind you doing it, that you ask them which ports or proxy to set up.

If you have permission, please leave a message log from one of the computers.
Let's see what it says there.

As a note, when I log in to these computers I have to log into (company).com for my account. I have admin privlages and can create a local admin acccount for BOINC to log in as if I need to.

5.8.16
I've tried newer versions but I get network errors with the HTTP proxy. (See my previous post "http error with proxy at work".) I also changed projects at work which may have been a problem with the proxy thinking something was hammering the site and banned the SETI@home servers.
Also, I'm leaving town for the weekend so any more testing will be next week.

Can you please email me the stderrdae.txt and stdoutdea.txt files from the computer with the error

Description:
The BOINC service terminated with the following error:

I'll check through them to see if they give a clue.

I figure out the problem. Boinc is trying to run twice.
The first time it loads fine when the computer starts up. It process data fine when no one is loged in. (Based on processor time before and after I logged off and on again an hour later.) The second time it tries to load is when anyone logs on which gives an error. I'm assuming the error is because it has already started and can't start a second time.

Well yes, BOINC checks if an instance of itself is running already. If it is, a next time you try to start BOINC, it'll give an error. Yet with it running as a service, it is difficult to start it twice.

So if you're running BOINC manually (started BOINC Manager up without the service running) and then try to start the service, it'll error out. Whether or not with that exact error, I don't know. I never tested it. ;-)
