There's a list of BOINC Projects and supported OS at this link: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/projects.php It would be nice of those projects listed as "Independent" still listed their country. Sometimes the country can be determined by looking at their URL, or by reading their website, but not always reliably. "Independent" is too vague - looks like they're hiding something. |

'Independent' means it's not sponsored by any instituion. Strictly speaking, we do not show Country for any project. BOINC maintainer. For any insight, check my BOINC Development Blog. |

Or if you need to know, you can look up the IP address and work it out. I don't see it as that big a deal. |

Re: "Strictly speaking, we do not show Country for any project." Ummm, it's right there (mostly, except for Independents) in your own list that I posted the link to. I'm not asking for the sponsor of the project, I'm asking for the country of the sponsor/project. Come to think of it, "Independent" is not a sponsor, either, so I guess I'm asking for that, too. And not just in the referenced list, but in BOINC when adding a new project the descriptive blurb should include this info. |

In reply to Dave's message of 23 May 2026: Or if you need to know, you can look up the IP address and work it out. I don't see it as that big a deal. I've played that game and don't get reliable results. You might get the location of the company that hosts the servers, not necessarily the country of the sponsor paying the rent. I'm paying for the hardware, electricity, and my own time & effort. I'd like to know this info. |

I judge a project on what the project tells me on their website and or what I can learn about the research they are doing elsewhere. The other option is for those projects not to be listed by BOINC but I know from other posts, David and others from BOINC don't want to spend their time being judge and jury over project eligibility. If you don't trust a project or believe it may be associated with a country whose research you don't want to support, then it is down to you to do your own due diligence. |

I never asked for that. I'm just saying that clear identification of the sponsor and country should be included in the basic description somewhere e.g. BOINC Add Project description and/or your list of projects so that contributors are able to make their own determinations without wasting time sleuthing for this fundamentally basic information. Thanks. |

However, if this information is not provided to the BOINC people, then by rejecting the projects they are doing exactly that. |

Pretty much BOINC is an open community and it tends to be self policed. Bad actors and undeserving projects don't tend to last long. If the work and or research by a Project appeals to you you run the Project. If it doesn't appeal to you your don't run it or you stop. Since 1999 I have run a lot of Projects and dropped a few. Respectfully Bill F In October 1969 I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; There was no expiration date.
