Yes and no. WCG will run on a laptop, but it will run hot so some sort of extra cooling should be used. (This extra cooling can range from a simple fan blasting cool air at the base of the laptop to some very expensive cooling trays - just don't sit with the laptop on your knees...) |

just don't sit with the laptop on your knees...Or with the laptop on a soft surface. Only let it operate when on a hard surface (sheets, towels, pillows, cushions etc will block the air intakes). Much older laptops had very effective cooling. Current laptops (unless they are workstation/desktop replacement units) are much, much more compact and their cooling isn't nearly as effective. Limiting the number of CPU cores/threads BOINC can use would probably be a good idea (either using one of the web based computing preference Locations for laptop specific settings, or just setting them locally in the BOINC Manager- Options, Computing preferences, Use at most xxx% of the CPUs. Set it to 50%, then Save and see how hot things get/how much noise the fan makes. Increase or decrease that value as necessary). Grant Darwin NT. |
