Volunteer supplied posts about project outages will continue to appear here. Please keep it on topic, post as much about the project outage itself, or about the return of the project only. Want to have an in-depth discussion? There's a whole forum outside this thread that you can use to start new threads in.

main.cpdn.org is down. latest batch on development branch still needs some work so no one is missing out. I suspect Oxford are still messing about with the infrastructure which was the reason on last occasion I checked about.

Feeder backend at Gaia@home has been offline for most of the day. Keeps throwing contacts into 2 hour backoffs.

iThena has been down for awhile now, ~2 weeks, I had to dump my machine here recently and reattach all my projects. I can get to the landing page, ithena.net, but neither of the projects, Measurements or Computational, will load, nor will the project attach.

From Glenn one of the project scientists.

This is being caused by excessive requests from companies/sites crawling CPDN webpages and accessing task results. We have traced some of the requests to sites building Large Language Models. The problem has been ongoing since last year and although CPDN have taken steps to reduce it, it's a persistent problem that's in part due to the open nature of the boinc server and also the very large number of batches in the CPDN database.

I have temporarily disabled viewing user's task results to improve the responsiveness of main.cpdn.org whilst we are still being bombarded by webcrawler requests.
The plan is to add in a login check in order to see any task results which will help but we need bit of time to change the website code.

There's a project that already has this- when looking at people's systems, if you try to check on a particular result, it requires you to log in to do so.

This AI/ML/LLM scraping is getting beyond ridiculous
Recently read a story about the impact of it on the likes of Wikipedia- it's bringing them to their knees as well with the increased load on their servers.
