Hello everyone, I've been running Bonic for years and was happily using the last version 7. Tonight I thought I'd upgrade as the NOTICES tab told me there was a version to upgrade to. This seems to have been a mistake! Have downloaded the official installer (boinc_8.0.2_windows_x86_64_vbox) . The failure happens with both the Virtual Box and none Virtual Box installers. The installer seemed to run ok (Virtual box installed fine) and my old 7.xx version of Bonic has been removed. However, when it comes to installing the latest version of Bonic the installer fails. The ultimate error message is: "The file *FILE PATH*\BOINC.MSI is not a valid installation package for the product BOINC. Try to find the installation package BOINC.MSI in a folder from which you can install BOINC. " I'm running an old machine (it's a decade old now) but was running BOINC 7.xx fine an hour ago! I5 4690 ATI R9 380X 12Gb Ram Windows 10 22H2 Can anyone help? The installer error message seems generic, have googled and got issues with MS Office going back to Office 2013!! Since the installer removed my old version, I have no version of Bonic running at the moment! All help appreciated. Thank you Chris |

Files called 'BOINC.msi' are used twice during installation: first, to remove the old version cleanly, and then later to install the new version. The 'removal' version is usually stored on your local machine - squirreled away in a quiet corner just so it can be re-used for the upgrade. In rare cases, this copy can be deleted during over-enthusiastic disk housekeeping. If this has happened, all is not lost: Look to see if you have still got the BOINC installer package you used to install the most recent v7 BOINC package. If not, download it again from the BOINC dowload folder. Make sure you get exactly the same BOINC version. Run that old installer: if the version matches, you should see an offer to 'repair' the old version. Follow all the instructions and exit the installer: don't start BOINC at this stage. The repaired version should replace the missing BOINC.msi, and allow the new installer to run normally. [BOINC.msi only affects the base BOINC installation - I don't think you need to do anything special about vbox. But I'm not an expert on that point] |

Solved my own problem. It took some doing (and some old FAQs leading to outdated links) but I uninstalled old Boinc (installer hadn't done it properly it seems) and wiped everything Boinc-related from the registry. Now I'm back up and running. FAQ page here if anyone is interested or needs it: https://boinc.mundayweb.com/wiki/index.php?title=Windows_Installer_Error_1706:_Setup_cannot_find_the_required_files. |
