Hello! After a long time, I'm running Boinc again and have a few questions: 1. it used to be possible to set Boinc as a screensaver - is this function no longer available? 2. i'm using the flathub because the normal installation won't work, do they both use the same profile directory and where is it? 3. if I install both versions, do they get in each other's way? 4. i would like to know when the normal installation will work again. Is Boinc fast at fixing bugs? Many thanks in advance. Yours sincerely, R.Lehmeier Translated with DeepL.com (free version) |

1. Not sure for Linux, for Windows it should still work. 2. No, these are different. And I suggest to use vanilla packages if your OS is supported: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/linux_install.php 3. I haven't tested that, but they will probably work in parallel. I do not suggest using it this way. 4. Normal installation is working (see the link above). Are we fast? I don't know, it depends on many factors and the complexity of the issue. BOINC maintainer. For any insight, check my BOINC Development Blog. |

First of all, thank you for your quick reply. 1. Not sure for Linux ... That's a pity, there should be such a possibility under Linux - maybe something for the future ? 2. No, these are different. And I suggest to use vanilla packages I don't know what the vanilla packages stand for, but version 8.0.2 is used in EndeavouOs. 3. Ok, I didn't plan to use them at the same time, but I will switch to the normal version as soon as it works. At the moment this version doesn't connect to the localhost and you can't select projects because the window doesn't appear. But I'm not giving up hope. What would be interesting is where the Boinc data is stored. In the home directory there is the directory .Boinc but it only contains 2 files ( stderrgui.txt and stdoutgui.txt ). 4. I realize that the complexity of a problem is a decisive factor in how quickly it can be solved, but I also know that not all projects have the resources and the will to react quickly. |

1. Not sure for Linux, for Windows it should still work. And even then it will depend on the project's application. Some do support graphics, many don't as these days there is no need for screen Aside from LCDs not suffering from burn-in, power saving modes are much more effective & reliable than they were 20+ years ago. And LCDs turn back on from standby very quickly, compared to old CRT monitors. So screen savers are now just a bit of tech history. Grant Darwin NT. |

CPDN used to show graphics for its apps that let you see information about the world that was being modelled. The programmer who wrote that code left the project about ten years ago (from memory) and the show graphics option along with the screensaver are not longer available for the project. For the global models CPDN used then the graphics showed if the particular task had gone rogue and was producing an ice world with temperatures all over the globe heading to absolute zero. While not being able to name them I believe there may still be the odd project around where the show graphics button works but I am unable to comment on the projects I run apart from CPDN as none have work currently. |
