Going to Options>Computing preferences type in (say) 50% for "Use at most x% of the CPUs" >hit save.
Previously it's halted 1/2 the tasks nearly instantly (originally set to 100%), now it just does nothing and all tasks stay running.
I've read this thread - https://boinc.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=15303 , and tried the cpu sched debug log, but didn't see anything about 'deadline miss', I'll post the debug log below.
I tried changing the 'activity' options from 'run always' to 'run based on preferences', no change (and I'm sure choosing 50% of the CPU did used to work with 'always run' anyway).

Btw, a separate problem that you'll notice below (App version uses missing GPU 'ATI'), which happened after I upgraded from an old AMD (ATI) card to a later Nvidia card, if you know how to fix that too, I'll be all ears! :) (but it's not so pressing).

Try setting the value against computer not in use as well as against computer in use.

App version uses missing GPU 'ATI'

Uninstall your AMD drivers. Keeping them on your system will allow BOINC to detect them and assume an AMD card is in there. Maybe use DDU to completely rid your system of the remnants of the AMD drivers and then reinstall the Nividia drivers for good measure.

As for your other problem, -just to make sure- set the preferences at "while the system is in use" and "while the system is idle".

Strange, I have found both 8.0.2 and 8.0.4 work as expected so long as I make sure I type the restrictions into the correct space! (I forget what Richard told me about when the separate sections for preferences while CPU was in use and when not in use was introduced. If not paying attention, I still get that wrong sometimes!)

Thanks for the replies guys, although even when I'm using the computer 100% of the CPU is still being used with 50% set.
Are you saying the idle setting will affect in use CPU usage too?? That would make the separate fields redundant, lol.

I thought I'd uninstalled the AMD drivers, but I'll double check, and use DDU if need be (I recall using that before sometime ago).

So I tried changing the 'when not in use' field to 50%, and that worked! Even when I am using the computer, only 6 threads are running (although curiously CPU usage is at ~60%).
And even when I changed the 'in use' field back to 100%, it still was only running 6 threads.
So it seems the 2 fields work opposite to what they state? (although I was unable to test the 'in use' idle minutes because the minutes field is greyed out). Anyway, I assume that's a bug?

Running DDU and deleting any AMD grx drivers hasn't changed anything.
I thought maybe the appinfo file might be pointing to my old grx card, but I couldn't find it in the Einstein>data>projects folder so I'm lost there.
In SETI I just deleted any file in its project folder that had ATI in it, and that made no difference! (I know I could just delete SETI entirely, but I like to keep it for old times sake). I found it's appinfo file, but there's no mention of ATI in there.
Anymore ideas?

Do you see the changing number of the running Tasks in BOINC Manager when you have different settings for 'In use' and 'Not in use'?

In those you attached I see no event when BOINC client switched from 'In use' to 'Not in use' to check what actually happens.

Hmm, ok, but I don't think you'll see the client switching from (seeing the computer) 'in use' to 'not use', I mentioned earlier (17th) that the 'input in last __ minutes' field is greyed out, so I can't input any time in there. So I'm guessing BOINC thinks my PC is always in use? And yet the 'use at most ___% of the CPU' only works in the 'not in use' section.

So I stopped using my PC at about 03:06 (when I stopped playing ED & I changed CPU usage from 50% to 100%) and didn't use it again until about 11:40 today (during this log).
I'm not seeing anywhere where it recognises the PC isn't being used, but maybe you can?? Anyway, here's the whole log.

That would explain why I couldn't reproduce the issue with 8.0.4 :)

Yea that's part of the problem, they talk about not being able to set the time limit, but it's unclear if whether setting the % CPU usage works or not for them.
I guess I'll find out when 8.0.4 is released.
Do you know roughly when it's due for it's stable release? (I couldn't find out).

The bug report that Vitalii linked shows it happened with 8.0.4

Unfortunately, there were some blockers for that.

Ok, no worries.

You have set them to use an optimized amd gpu app with app_info.xml. You will have to rewrite them for nvidia executables.
