All,

It appears that BOINC 5.8 on Windows XP is allowing my projects to run longer than my 60 minutes specified in my prefs, in one case almost twice as long. That doesn't bother me, but is that a feature of the new scheduling algorithm?

Thanks,
Jim

Not sure whether the 'leave in memory' option has anything to do with it, but the new version switches after checkpoint saves to prevent loss of crunching time. 60 minutes or 2 hours, at the end of the day, week, fortnight, BOINC makes sure that all projects get their assigned share of crunching time.

So, if an app doesn't checkpoint for 120 minutes, BOINC will let it run for that long even if the 60 minute run time is set? Sounds OK for me unless you run an app that for some reason does not checkpoint.

Which is why it's a really good thing. Either leave app running longer than desired (if app does not checkpoint this could mean: run it until it's done) or loose all the work done in past hour (or whatever the desired interval length is) and do it again (and again...).

A common misconception is that the 'switch between applications' setting will cause Boinc to switch project at a fix point in time. It does not. It only tell Boinc that this is the most time it should crunch a WU before it recalculating the debt, to determine if it should switch project to maintain the resource share ratio you have set. Boinc will wait for the next checkpoint, if there hasn't been one in the previous (I think) 10 min. Some project don't have checkpoint and will complete a WU before doing this assesment. It also checks to see if any other WUs is having a deadline problem and should be getting priority. Boinc then decides if it should continue crunching the same WU or switch to another.

Interesting....
