Hi group, I am having a major problem installing and running BOINC. I recently upgraded my Linux OS to Ubuntu 21.04. At that time BOINC failed to launch, I then had no luck at fully installing BOINC without receiving an error message. I installed via command line. It returned a partial error message during installation and finished. The icon shows up in the Menu but fails to launch. It reports the following error message: Failed to Change to directory var/lib/boinc-client (Permission denied) I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times to no avail. I am stumped because BOINC was working fine on this computer Hp laptop running Linux Ubuntu 20.04. I am not sure if it did install as a service. |

First thing I would try is adding yourself to the group boinc. |

Hi group, What were the error messages? Is it Boinc manager that will not run or the client? If it is the manager then look in you home directory for a 5 byte file called Boinc-Manager-xxxxx, if it is there delete it and retry. That file is a lock file to prevent 2 copies of the manager to run at once but it can get left behind occasionally. |

What were the error messages? The OP said: Failed to Change to directory var/lib/boinc-client (Permission denied) It helps to read the whole post instead of just half. @StarzDust, see https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=14023#101239 and further. |

Hi, I need to add the following to my original post. After adding some additional software to my Ubuntu 21.04 from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Cuda website I was able to install Boinc client and manager. I also am able to run the Boinc manager and add my Einstein@Home account to the manager. I am able to start by downloading packets and Boinc happily goes about processing them. However, when I start the sphere screen saver it doesn't function properly, When I click on Show Graphics the sphere appears BUT it doesn't rotate continuously as it should. The screen saver will remain static for a few seconds then jump ahead in time and remain static for a few seconds and jumps ahead in time and it repeats. Also, none of the set of command line functionality using the keyboard work. So, I'm assuming that something I installed for the website I identified above either changed the OS or I need to add some additional software so that the screensaver works correctly. I will cross post this thread to the Einstein@home website. Regards, John |
