You lucky devil. :-) I did get a text at 18:28 (a weird 1). The result of your recent test has been received. A further test is advised(definitely Vampires). Please collect a form from the surgery at your convenience. Then provided a link. Clicking on it, it took me to nhs.net, a site for health providers (Not patients). Sheesh. Then at 18:40, got another text, this 1 from the doctor. She advises to attend the A&E as discussed & do not delay. Then the message continued... ...the ECG changes are concerning & require specialist assessment. Please do not delay your attendance. Jeebers! Had I been told that yesterday morning, I would have gone straight to A&E. |

As a cardiac kinda guy, if there's a heart procedure (short of a transplant) I've had it, runs in the family. My advice is to get thee to the local sawbones. |

Thanks guys but I think Rob got it right. What a frigging pantomime. Called into surgery to query the 18:28 message. Yep, test results in & a follow up in 4 weeks was required. This was booked. That was at 10:00. Surgery to bus, 75 secs. Got there well timed as bus turned up. Got to bus station, up turned hospital bus. Again nicely timed. So instead of taking nearly 90 minutes, took 55. Got logged into A&E 11:09. An hour later, got name called. Nurse just took BP, Temp & Oxy level Then sent me to ACU to wait. Got logged in, waited a couple a couple of hours then the pantomime started. Had another ECG(nurse asked why I was there, explained). Got told ECG A.O.K. But sent sent back to wait for more blood works. Didn't like the sound of that but went anyway. Waited another hour, enter a cubicle (4 other patients waiting). My turn came so asked a question as to why it was needed. Well apparently they were informed that I suffered from chest pains. Asked who told them, they said I did. WTF? Nurse then said that as my last blood test was 8 July they would like to take another & keep me for observation. I DID not like that after what I experienced last year, so asked another question. When I give you my NHS No can you access the same info as the surgery "Yes" was the reply. So why can't you see the double blood tests taken on 15/7? ...So glad that I didn't lose my cool(there were 2 coppers in hallway dealing with a previous incident apparently). Just turned around & came home. Sheesh! |

Sounds like my government, who want to introduce road pricing on top of the usual road tax. Time for all the EV drivers to switch back to good old gasoline and diesel. https://www.whatcar.com/news/pay-per-mile-tax-set-out-for-electric-car-drivers A pay-per-mile tax for electric car drivers has been confirmed by the Government in an attempt to offset fuel duty losses. A new Electric Vehicle Excise Duty (eVED) system will be introduced from 1 April 2028, requiring drivers of electric cars to pay 3p per mile, the UK Government has confirmed. The new eVED system will come into force alongside the current road tax system, in an attempt to offset the losses from fuel duty as more drivers switch from combustion to electric power. With the additional pay-per-mile tax, EV drivers covering an annual average of 8000 miles will need to pay £440 per year – £240 for the pay-per-mile tax and £200 in road tax (VED). |

Time for all the EV drivers to switch back to good old gasoline and diesel I knew there was a reason I'm keeping all my old gas guzzlers. Aside from the fact that all 3 of them will probably outlive me. |

With the additional pay-per-mile tax, EV drivers covering an annual average of 8000 miles will need to pay £440 per year – £240 for the pay-per-mile tax and £200 in road tax (VED).Still a lot cheaper to have an EV for me with most of my charging being either free from my roof or in winter at an EV tariff of £0.08/KWh. The people who will get hammered and end up paying more than they did for petrol/diesel are those without the ability to charge at home. They get hammered by the companies running the charging stations, have to pay VAT at 20% instead of 5% on top of that. Given that for between eight and nine months of the year, my combined gas and electric bill is under what I used to pay for petrol, £0.03 extra per mile will annoy me but not nearly as much as forking out for petrol would have done. I still think it a retrograde step and one that will delay the transition to EVs. |

Besides, how isn't it a step back to go from a car that can drive 700-900 miles before refueling for 2 minutes, to a car that drives maybe 500 miles before requiring to hang on the wire for anywhere between 30 minutes and 8 hours? And don't talk about the carbon footprint, because that electricity isn't all coming from solar and wind, but a lot still from coal and gas power. 🤡 |

They've been around for over 150 years.Electric vehicles (EVs) primarily use rare-earth permanent magnets, predominantly Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB). These magnets are favoured for their incredibly high power density, which allows auto-makers to build lightweight, compact, and highly efficient drive motors. let alone do those longer trips on a regular basis.You must come to Europe some time for the various holidays and (mini-)vacations, where whole families pile into their car with caravan, camper or go for staying in a vacation home in other parts of their own country, or in other neighbouring countries, or even down south and they don't all want to fly. They do like to get there as quickly as possible. It takes more than 2 minutes to refuel a ICE vehicle that can do even 700 milesI asked Gemini: To fill the tank of a car with a 700-mile range, it takes about 1.5 to 5 minutes at a gas pump, depending on your vehicle's fuel type and tank size. Assuming an average pump flow rate of 8 to 10 gallons per minute (GPM), filling a large 15 to 20-gallon tank from empty will take 1.5 to 3 minutes. But it's still less than filling up the EV: Electric Vehicle (EV): Charging a battery large enough for a 700-mile range varies by charging speed. A high-speed DC fast charger can add hundreds of miles in 20 to 30 minutes, while a Level 2 (240V) public or home charger can take 5 to 8+ hours to fully restore that range. and the cost of fuel and maintenance are now less than that for ICE vehicles.Don't come live in the Netherlands, where we get daily fearmongering that we don't have enough electricity, complete new municipals can't get onto our electric grid as it's full or unstable (depends on the day), the LNG-reserve for the winter is filled to 30% now (winter is around the corner, and not only do we still use gas to cook on and warm our home, but because wind and solar power are down in winter, gas powered electricity plants need to pick up the slack), we have a severe water shortage and are asked to use less water on a daily basis (the Netherlands are the delta of various rivers, we have a lot of lakes, but we have a water shortage... or bad management). Our government just added a soft drink tax, added tax to soft drinks and beer, because they want us to drink more water. But apparently we're not allowed to drink this water from the tap, because we have a water shortage, we're required to use 18 liters less water per day and in 10 years time, even 18 liters fewer per person, per day. Can you make sense of it? 🤡 Aside from the fearmongering, our electricity may be cheap, but then we're paying energy tax, on gas and electricity to discourage energy consumption and combat climate change. Yes, lets ignore the fact that year after year the amount of power being generated in most advanced (and some less advanced) economies is increasingly done by renewable sources and the the amount produced by non-renewable resources is declining.Which is all good and fine in summer, with lots of sun and wind above 3 Bft and below 7 Bft, but like I said, in the winter, most of the solar isn't gathering enough to burn a candle, while we have weeks with very little wind, or storms. |

In reply to Gary Charpentier's message of 21 Jul 2026: In reply to Grant (SSSF)'s message of 20 Jul 2026:Actually, even in the US it is still the case; however the fact that they have paid 2 billion dollars in public funds to two companies (so far) to not go ahead with renewable developments means that over the next 12-24 months the increase in renewable output will decline, and the decline in non-renewable production will slow. 24months + and things will probably start to reverse, but only due to the increase of subsidies for fossil fuel based generation. Even with the removal of tax breaks for renewable projects, they are still presently more economical than fossil based projects- hence the need for the increased government subsidies for non-renewable generation projects (and no cuts backs in or removal of existing subsidies). That's the great thing about America- private enterprise is good, government interference is bad, except when certain high impact lobbying industries are no longer economically viable. Then private enterprise is still good, but only with government interference to support it. /end sarcasm. Grant Darwin NT. |

Rare earth minerals are not particularly rare. The issue is much more that over 80% of the supply chain is controlled by one nation, China.In absolute terms they're not that rare, but in relative terms compared to the quantities that would be needed to economically electrify everything, they are. That's why much of the present design work is along the lines of producing motors that are capable of the same power output, but requiring much less of those rare earth minerals than present motors of comparable output. Also there is quite a bit of work going into asynchronous (induction) motor development as they require no rare earth minerals at all (but their efficiency is significantly lower). Similarly with battery development- the highest energy density (and safe) Lithium based batteries also use Nickel, Manganese and Cobalt (NMC), and like rare earth minerals they're not that rare, but in terms of the amounts needed economically, they're not all that common. Hence the push for semi-solid state and solid-state batteries as they can give much higher energy densities, so other existing battery types that don't use those minerals (eg LFP- Lithium Iron Phosphate) can be used instead. Obviously those are very high total power output. What is being improved is output per unit of weight and/or volume. |

New phone, new troubles. Several apps, transferring data over not as straightforward as it should be. Those that didn't work first time Bluemail Givenergy inverter app BBC sounds (Just needed saved password) Peugeot app several others with minor niggles. HSBC one, asks for information about account or credit card then goes to a screen to input date of birth. Click to month, click on number, open up screen for year. Scroll down a long way because i am getting old. Click on year, then click on continue. Except doing that leaves date of birth as today's date! Having input the date via the fancy screens, I then had to click in the box where it hadn't changed and manually put in the correct date of birth! |
