In 2010, I bought a Netbook (Samsung N220), which I use for general use, whilst travelling, but at home I just use it for running BOINC projects. I have installed the maximum amount of RAM (2048 MB) and it runs on Windows 10. Obviously, since 2010 technology has moved on a bit, so I'm just wondering, if anybody knows of a modern general purpose Netbook (for portability) which I could buy? John F. |

As always it depends on what you want to do with it. Just run BOINC? Which projects? Does it need a GPU? If so which brand? Do you want a good i5 or i7 CPU in it, or a budget i3 or Celeron? What's the minimum and maximum you want to spend on it? Any brand preferences? |

Thanks for your reply. 1) No brand preference, just a general purpose Netbook. 2) From memory, I paid under £500 (UK) for the Samsung N220, so an equivalent would be useful. 3) I did think most computers had a GPU (or a video card) installed, so is that a problem? The Samsung N220 had a video card installed. 4) Probably a good i5 would be useful. John F. |

3) I did think most computers had a GPU (or a video card) installed, so is that a problem? The Samsung N220 had a video card installed. If you have a display, there's a video card or chipset somewhere. Nearly all current CPUs have an integrated GPU, and most of them are capable of BOINC--but crunching on them will also increase your CPU temperature, so be sure and use Tthrottle to keep your shiny new computer from melting. Been there, done that. The closest thing to the old "netbook" style that I've seen are the transformable tablets, otherwise you step up to like a 13" laptop. Tablets of that size (approx. 9-10") are almost exclusively powered by Atom processors. My Detailed BOINC Stats ![]() |
